by Sally Shapiro

This is a poem for you who is broke
you who is forgotten, left empty
a washed up shell of unfulfilled hope
who has known no start but an ending

Pain lies in remembering
beauty is in the discarded
like broken bottles left surrendering
to the waves that bombarded

Tossed aside flecks of life
pummeled and beaten by history
retaining shape through strife
heavenly debris that seem contradictory

This is a poem for you, shattered by time
marked by forgotten sorrows and lingering laughs
a blue green hue blessed by the divine
washed up delight, a broken epitaph
