Callow broke soil,
seeded, hungered, waited,
harvested milled baked and
ate. A laborious love it is, to eat.
‘Aysh, they named the miracle: life.

Cradle it with reverent breath,
kiss it in prayer, until your lips
remember Adam’s hand,
toil over the sweltering tannour,
receive thanks only with
sahtain!

Eat well, live
to tear it for others,
so you may fill them with yourself.
And when the angel takes
teeth and time
let them say,
He has eaten all his bread.
